Quality, durability and sustainability
Space represents international brands who as well as leading the world in quality, design excellence, research and innovation, are keenly developing products characterised by superior recyclability and disassembly properties, new sustainable materials and design processes. As Leighton Clarke, Group CEO, Space Furniture, remarks, ‘One of the founding principles of Space’s philosophy is to support design that is built on quality, function, beauty and importantly product longevity.’
Quality is embedded in collections from the carefully curated group of luxury brands, many of whom have been part of the Space family for more than 20 years. We believe in beautiful, well-designed furniture, lighting and complements made with care, pieces that can be handed down from one generation to the next. If time does influence the appearance of leather on a sofa for example, just like the softly worn steps found in an Italian palazzo, the patina of quality materials ages beautifully.
At B&B Italia, the brand’s ongoing pursuit of elegance, excellence and innovation has focused their R&D on the principles of a circular economy. Products are designed so that every element can be easily dismantled and materials have another lifecycle. They incorporate recycled fibres from PET bottles that are also fully recyclable, quality wood from FSC approved sustainable forestry and 100% recycled waste wood. Key outdoor pieces include the Mirto folding chairs by Antonia Citterio. Designed in light aluminium, a material that is infinitely recyclable, with a seat and back made from Batyline® Canatex mesh produced from innovative sustainable hemp fibre that replaces the polypropylene weaves traditionally used for the outdoors.
Launching ‘Kartell loves the planet,’ Kartell’s sustainable manufacturing blueprint covers everything from production to distribution chain, including the roll out of R&D to incorporate waste into their raw materials. They launched the ‘Kartell x Illycaffè’ project that produces the 100% recycled Re-Chair by Antonio Citterio made from discarded coffee capsules, while the brand’s range of new, renewable and recycled materials now make up almost half of the collection. Greener products also include the Smart Wood Collection by Philippe Starck and the iconic Bio Componibili now made in biopolymer sourced from renewable non-GMO agricultural waste. One of the biggest breakthroughs has been with their world-first transparent polycarbonates that are a key element of Kartell's product identity. The range now includes a second-generation renewable polymer derived from paper and cellulose waste that has reduced the collection’s environmental impact by 75% and helps the group to develop its sustainable industrial goals across the entire manufacturing process.

Buying tips
1
Consider the climate
It’s important to understand the particular aspect of your outdoor space before you purchase. Is it shaded in the morning and hot in the afternoon, or is the area bathed in sunshine all day. Understanding the climate and following the care instructions will ensure the longevity of your products.2
Further define the brief
Getting comfortable outdoors requires some planning. Think about how you spend time in the backyard. Is it a place where you gather with family for lunch and like to relax by the pool. Consider creating zones for cooking, dining and reclining, with outdoor rugs and plants to separate spaces.3
Customise your seating
Our outdoor collections are designed to be personalised. Sofas and tables come with multiple options and can be configured to suit the size and shape of your outdoor living space. While the range of colours, from table tops to bases and upholstery will add texture and nuance.4
Don’t forget about lighting
The key to creating the mood of a space is lighting. It has the power to transform the atmosphere so be creative. Celebratory sparkle for dinner gatherings with friends, task lighting for reading or a game of ping pong, the outdoor collection has a light for every brief. As seen in
