Josef Hoffmann

Architect Josef Hoffmann was born in Brtnice, Moravia, in 1870 and died in Vienna in 1956. After studying in Brno, he moved to Vienna in 1892 to train at the Academy of Fine Arts under Otto Wagner. In 1898 he was among the founders of the Vienna Secession, later co-founded the Wiener Werkstätte and in 1912 founded the Österreichischer Werkbund.

His N. 811 chair, designed in 1930 in bent beech and produced today by Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, combines outstanding comfort and lightness; it is also made as a counter stool.
