Poltronova
Plasma
In the context of Nigel Coates' growing interest in furniture, the Plasma armchair with a footrest reflects the English designer's taste for designing essential forms by digital means. Composed of a set of cushions in different combinations of colors and finishes, placed on a slender metal structure with harmonious curves, Plasma combines the simplicity of a continuous graphic sign with the complex technology of the structure, made with computerized methods of bending and welding.

- The Designer
Poltronova
In the 1960s, in a region such as Tuscany which produced literally nothing in the field of design, Poltronova had all the best on its team: not just Ettore Sottsass, who was its art director, but Gae Aulenti, Paolo Portoghesi, Giovanni Michelucci, Angelo Mangiarotti, the Archizoom and Superstudio groups, De Pas-D’Urbino-Lomazzi; not just the mentors, but also the leading exponents of New Design who were then called radicals…
The Centro Studi Poltronova was created in 2005 for two reasons: to archive important documents associated with the original Poltronova Company, and also to make some of its more iconic furniture and lighting pieces available in the marketplace.
Nigel Coates
Nigel Coates was born in Malvern in 1949 and trained at Nottingham University and the Architectural Association, where his teaching sparked the NATØ collective. In 1985 he co-founded Branson Coates Architecture, known for Caffè Bongo in Tokyo and the Body Zone at the Millennium Dome, and from 1995 he was Professor of Architecture at the Royal College of Art. He was elected a Royal Academician in 2023.
For Poltronova he designed the Plasma armchair and footrest in 2011: cushions on a slender metal frame of harmonious curves, bent and welded by computerised methods.
