Usha Umbrella Stand
The Maharajah of Indore commissioned Eckart Muthesius to build and furnish his Manik Bagh palace. Completed four years later, the palace was a masterpiece of the Art Deco style. Muthesius complemented his architecture with his own furniture and lamp designs, including the spiral-shaped umbrella stand Usha coiling upwards like a charmed snake. The original chrome-plated version reflects the environment, whereas the new colours, black and bronze, especially emphasize the lines of the design.

ClassiCon’s collection aims to produce individual pieces of great originality and formal perfection. Displaying the kind of value that lasts, ClassiCon collection pieces are destined to become coveted investments for future generations. ClassiCon has from its inception aspired not only to offer pieces by established figures such as Eileen Gray and Eckart Muthesius, but also to foster contemporary design and to present selected examples in its program. Naturally, the models chosen must display the kind of quality and advanced form that earns them the designation “classic”. That’s why ClassiCon is always open to new design ideas.
Eckart Muthesius
Eckart Muthesius studied applied arts in Berlin and at the London Polytechnic, then trained under his father, Hermann Muthesius, cofounder of the Deutscher Werkbund. In 1929 he met the future Maharajah of Indore in Oxford, who commissioned him to build and furnish the Manik Bagh palace, an Art Deco masterpiece completed within four years.
He designed much of its furniture and lighting himself, combined with pieces by Marcel Breuer, Charlotte Perriand and Eileen Gray. ClassiCon makes his Banu Stool, Satish Bar Stool, Mandu Valet Stand and Usha Umbrella Stand, designed for the palace in 1931 and 1932.
