Materia Coffee Table

Designed by Christian Haas

During the design process for Matéria, Christian Haas experimented with open-pored travertine, which is mainly used in monumental architecture. Haas has used it to design a narrow organically shaped tabletop. In order to create the slim profile, the asymmetrical contours and the concave surface that characterise the Matéria series, the stone is carefully hand-polished into its characteristic shape. In his search for variations on the sand-coloured travertine, Christian Haas developed a new and very unique method of his own: a water-based, biodegradable paint is applied to the travertine stone and then sanded off again. The indigo that remains in the depressions highlights the porous surface structure of the stone.
