Date added: 01/07/2014 Singapore :: Space Nurtures Winners Announced!

Singapore,  2 July 2014 - Nurul Azyyati Binte Mohamad Azmi, a first year student from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Department of 3D Design/ Interior and Exhibition) and  Yeo Wei Ling Jamie, a final year student from National University of Singapore (School of Design and Environment/ Industrial Design), have emerged as winners for Space Nurtures 2014 programme.  The prize is an all-expense-paid week-long summer design workshop titled ‘Prima Materia’ led by Formafantasmaat Domaine de Boisbuchet, France from 20 to 26 July followed by a week-long attachment with Vitra in Weil am Rhein, Switzerland from 27 July to 3 August.

The design competition comprised two phases. The preliminary phase required students to submit concept sketch of a repeated graphical pattern contextualised in modern day Singapore that is in the spirit of Vitra’s most illustrious designers Charles & Ray Eames, Verner Panton or Alexander Girard. The pattern would be applied onto a cushion cover as the primary medium. In addition, to display the versatility of the pattern,  a homeware/ accessory must be conceptualised that should serve as an extension of the collection. 20 finalists were selected during preliminary judging to enter into the final phase which required finalists to produce actual prototypes of their designs.

The final judging was held on 26 June at National Design Centre and was conducted by Mr. Brendon Lim from IMAJIN, Mr. SP Tan from Axis Point Design and Ms. Yah-Leng Yu from Foreign Policy Design. Azyyati stood out due to her enthusiasm in being involved with the manufacture process and her exceptional interest in craft whilst Jamie stood out due to her ingenuity in design and method of manufacture, and her unique ability to edit her work with restraint.

Upon returning from their trip, the winners will be involved in organising a prototype exhibition cum peer sharing event. Details will be announced soon.

Inaugurated in 2012, Space Nurtures is organised by Space Furniture and Vitra, and supported by the DesignSingapore Council. The objective is to select students with potential through a design competition and expose them to the multi-faceted world of design on an international level that is beyond the textbook. The programme will also equip budding design students with desirable skills to grow into commercially-viable designers of tomorrow.

Space Furniture thank all participants particularly the selected finalists for their effort in showcasing their creativity.
