Dutch designer Maarten Baas was born in Arnsberg, Germany but moved to The Netherlands in 1979 where he grew up. He studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven, followed by several months at the Politecnico of Milan. In June 2002 he graduated with two designs that included a series of charred furniture, now popularly known as the Smoke series. It is this collection that defined an approach to design that is without knowledge of, or care for, predisposed boundaries. In 2004 Maarten debuted his Smoke series in a solo-exhibition at Moss in New York. The exhibition titled ‘Where There’s Smoke...’ offered 25 unique pieces, each methodically burned with a blow torch and salvaged by translucent epoxy resin sealant. Torched classics included designs by Gaudi, Eames, Rietveld, Sottsass and the Campana Brothers among many others. Today his work is requested all over the world, he collaborates with furniture groups including Moooi, private clients, and hoteliers including Ian Schraager. Maarten lives and works in Waalre, near Eindhoven, where he produces handmade furniture and is continually developing new concepts and designs.
